Follow these steps carefully
Start the engine and let it idle for 3–5 minutes so the oil thins and carries contaminants out of the pan. Then switch the engine off, set the parking brake, and make sure the car sits on flat ground, because the F44's electronic oil-level reading and the sump drain both require the car to be level.
Release the hood and lift off the black acoustic engine cover by pulling it straight up off its rubber ball-stud mounts. This exposes the top of the 1.5L turbo three-cylinder and the black plastic oil filter housing on top of the engine. Set the cover aside somewhere it cannot fall and scratch the paint.
Place a rag around the filter housing, then loosen the black plastic cap with a 27 mm socket, turning slowly so trapped oil drains back into the housing instead of spilling. Lift the cap out with the cartridge still attached to its stem, then pull the old element straight off and remove the two old O-rings from their grooves in the cap.
Lubricate the new O-rings with fresh engine oil and seat them fully in their grooves so they cannot roll or pinch during tightening. Push the new cartridge onto the cap stem until it seats, lower the assembly back into the housing, and tighten the cap to the BMW specification — firm but not forced, since the threads are plastic and strip easily.
Chock the rear wheels, raise the front with a floor jack at the factory jacking point, and support it securely on jack stands — never work under a jack alone. Position a wide drain pan under the composite oil sump and unscrew the plastic drain plug, which BMW specifies replacing at every oil change, then let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
Fit a new plastic drain plug and turn it until it seats to the service specification, then wipe the sump area completely clean so any future seepage is easy to spot. Lower the car off the stands back onto level ground and remove the drain pan before refilling.
Pour approximately 4.5 liters of BMW Longlife-approved 0W-20 into the filler neck using a clean funnel, keeping the last half-liter back at first. Start the engine for about 30 seconds, switch it off, wait one minute, then read the electronic oil level in the iDrive service menu and top up carefully to the maximum mark without overfilling.
In iDrive, open Vehicle status, then Service required, and reset the engine oil item so the condition-based service counter restarts its countdown. Take a short test drive, then look under the engine for drips at the sump plug and around the filter housing before considering the job finished.
