Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps carefully

1

Find the filter housing in the engine bay

Open the hood and go to the passenger side cowl area at the rear of the engine compartment, just below the windshield. The F86 X6 M carries two cabin filter elements in a plastic housing here — not under the glovebox like many other BMWs.

2

Remove the housing cover

Release the fasteners holding the plastic housing cover: a set of 90-degree twist-locks or 10mm plastic nuts around the cover perimeter. Turn twist-locks a quarter turn and lift the cover straight up.

3

Take out the old filters and clean the housing

Lift out both old filter elements and note the airflow arrows on their sides — they point downward toward the interior. Wipe leaves and dust out of the empty housing before continuing.

4

Install the new filters arrows-down

Drop the two new filters into the housing with their airflow arrows pointing DOWN, matching the original orientation. Each element should sit flat with no curled edges or gaps.

5

Refit and secure the cover

Refit the plastic housing cover and secure every twist-lock or 10mm plastic nut around its edge. A fully seated cover keeps water and engine-bay air out of the intake path.

6

Test the climate system

Close the hood, start the X6 M, and run the climate system through its fan speeds. Verify strong, even airflow from the vents and the absence of the old musty smell.

All Done!

Test your repair before closing everything up. If something doesn't work right, double-check your steps.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • • Installing the filters upside down — the airflow arrows must point down toward the interior.
  • • Buying E70/E71-generation filters, which look similar but are a different size than the F15/F16 parts.
  • • Breaking the 90-degree twist-locks or 10mm plastic nuts on the housing cover.
  • • Only swapping one of the two filter elements.
  • • Forgetting to refit the cowl shroud fully, leaving a gap that lets unfiltered air and water in.
