Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps carefully

1

Loosen lugs and support the vehicle

On level ground, crack the wheel lug nuts loose on the Cadillac XT5. Chock the opposite wheels, jack at the approved lift point, and support with jack stands. Remove the wheel. Wear gloves and eye protection.

2

Remove brakes and free the hub area

Remove the brake caliper and hang it with a hook/wire — do not let it dangle by the hose. Remove the caliper bracket and rotor. On FWD/AWD, remove the axle nut and separate the axle from the hub if it passes through the bearing; support the axle so the inner joint is not strained.

3

Disconnect knuckle attachments as needed

Unbolt ABS wheel-speed sensor and any dust shields. Separate the tie-rod end and/or ball joint(s) only as required for hub/knuckle access on this design. Mark camber/alignment eccentrics if present.

4

Remove the old hub bearing assembly

Remove the hub-face bolts (or press the bearing from the knuckle if it is a pressed-in design). Tap the hub loose with a soft mallet if stuck — never hammer the ABS ring or bearing race directly. Compare the new hub/bearing to the old unit.

5

Install the new bearing/hub

Clean the knuckle bore/mounting face. Install the new hub assembly or press the new bearing squarely with the correct drivers — apply force only on the proper race. Torque hub bolts/axle nut to the specified values (axle nuts are often one-time stretch bolts).

6

Reassemble, torque, and road-test

Reinstall rotor, bracket, and caliper; torque fasteners to spec. Reconnect ABS sensor and suspension links. Refit the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque lugs in a star pattern. Pump the brakes firm before moving. Road-test and listen for growl/hum; get an alignment if ball joints or tie rods were separated.

All Done!

Test your repair before closing everything up. If something doesn't work right, double-check your steps.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • • Not properly securing the vehicle before starting the repair
  • • Failing to torque the axle nut to the manufacturer's specifications
  • • Not using anti-seize lubricant on the new bearing to prevent future issues
