Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps carefully

Disconnect the battery

Disconnect the negative battery terminal first. The starter has a direct power cable that is always hot — never skip this step.

Locate the starter

Find the starter where the engine meets the transmission bellhousing. Access may require going under the vehicle — use jack stands if so.

Remove the wires

Label and remove the main power cable and the solenoid trigger wire. Note which goes where so you reconnect correctly.

Remove the mounting bolts

Remove the two or three mounting bolts holding the starter. Support it as you remove the last bolt — it is heavy and can drop.

Install the new starter

Position the new starter, install and torque the mounting bolts to spec, reconnect the wires, and reconnect the battery.

Test the repair

Start the engine and verify the starter engages cleanly and cranks at normal speed. If it still will not crank, check the battery, cables, and ignition switch.

Test your repair before closing everything up. If something doesn't work right, double-check your steps.
