Follow these steps carefully
Always disconnect the negative battery cable first. On the Volvo S90, the starter is typically on the bellhousing — access may be from above or below. If you must raise the vehicle, use a floor jack on a solid lift point and support with jack stands on level ground. Wear eye protection.
Identify the B+ battery cable and the solenoid trigger wire/connector on the starter. Remove the nut and cable, then unplug the trigger connector. Cap or tape the battery cable end so it cannot short to ground.
Support the starter body, then remove the mounting bolts (often 13–15 mm). Lower or lift the starter out clear of the bellhousing. Note any heat shield, bracket, or alignment dowel that must transfer to the new unit.
Compare nose length, clocking of the solenoid, mounting ears, and pinion gear to the old starter. Transfer any brackets or heat shields. Confirm the drive gear turns freely by hand.
Maneuver the new starter into place, start the mounting bolts by hand, then tighten evenly to spec. Reconnect the solenoid trigger connector and the B+ cable; tighten the cable nut firmly without stretching the terminal.
Reconnect the negative battery cable. Verify the Volvo S90 cranks strongly without grinding or slow-spin symptoms. Confirm no chafed wiring and that any underbody shields are reinstalled before a final road check.
