2011 Ford Fiesta shudders taking off from a stop

That shudder is the signature complaint of the DPS6 dual clutch transmission, and it is not just how they are. Your Fiesta drives like an automatic, but inside that gearbox are two dry clutches, and shudder on takeoff is how a worn or contaminated clutch shows up.

Leaking seals are a common cause. Oil gets onto the clutch friction material and the shudder comes back even after a clutch job if the leak is not fixed. Worse when hot fits this picture, since the clutch is already warm and the contamination gets worse.

Start with the cheap step. Have a dealer or a well equipped independent shop run the latest TCM software update and a clutch adaptive relearn with the right scan tool. That fixes some cars and it is inexpensive.

If the shudder stays after that, the clutch pack is likely worn and it needs replacement, which typically runs around $1,500 at a dealer. Make sure the seals are checked at the same time so you are not buying the same job twice.

One honest note: Ford did extend the clutch warranty to 7 years or 100,000 miles and the TCM to 10 years or 150,000 miles on these cars, but on a 2011 both have expired by now, so expect this to come out of pocket. And skip any fluid flush or additive. This is a dry clutch, and no bottle or flush fixes it.
