Loosen lugs and raise the vehicle

On level ground, crack the wheel lug nuts loose while the tire is on the ground. Jack the front at the approved lift point and support with jack stands. Chock the rear wheels.

Remove the wheel

Finish removing the lug nuts and pull the wheel. Set it under the vehicle as a backup support. Turn the steering to improve caliper access if helpful.

Remove the caliper

Remove the caliper guide-pin or mounting bolts. Lift the caliper off the rotor. Hang it from the strut with a wire hook — never let it dangle by the brake hose.

Remove old pads and hardware

Slide out the old pads. Remove abutment clips/hardware if replacing. Inspect the rotor for deep grooves, cracks, or excessive thickness variation; replace or resurface if needed.

Compress the piston

Using a C-clamp or brake piston tool with an old pad, slowly push the caliper piston fully back. Watch the brake fluid reservoir so it does not overflow.

Clean and install hardware

Clean the caliper bracket ears with a wire brush and brake cleaner. Install new abutment clips. Apply a thin film of brake lubricant only on metal-to-metal contact points — keep grease off friction material.

Install new pads and caliper

Install the new pads in the correct inner/outer orientation. Reinstall the caliper, start the bolts by hand, then torque guide pins/mounting bolts to specification.

Refit wheel and pump the pedal

Reinstall the wheel, snug lugs, lower the vehicle, and torque lug nuts in a star pattern to spec. Pump the brake pedal until firm before driving. Bed the pads per the pad manufacturer’s procedure.
