Follow these steps carefully
Park your 1998-2002 Honda Accord on a level surface and engage the parking brake. The 6th-generation Accord with the 2.3L F23A1 four-cylinder engine holds 4.5 quarts of oil and specifies 5W-30 viscosity. Gather 5 quarts of 5W-30 oil, a compatible filter (Honda 15400-PLM-A02 or Wix), a new drain plug washer, and basic hand tools. Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes for better drainage.
Jack up the front of the Accord and place jack stands under the front subframe. The 6th-gen Accord sits relatively low, so lifting provides necessary clearance. Chock the rear wheels. As shown in the video, the procedure is demonstrated on a 2000 Accord 4-cylinder and applies to all 1997-2003 models with the same engine family.
Slide a drain pan under the oil pan. The drain plug is a 17mm hex bolt on the rear-facing side of the oil pan. Loosen it counterclockwise with a box-end wrench, then unscrew by hand. Hot oil will flow quickly, so position the pan to catch the stream. Allow at least 10 minutes for complete drainage of all 4.5 quarts.
The oil filter on the F23A1 engine is located on the back of the engine block, accessible from underneath. Move the drain pan beneath it. Use a filter wrench to loosen counterclockwise. Spin off by hand and drain residual oil into the pan. Wipe the mounting surface clean and verify the old rubber gasket came off with the filter.
Apply a thin coat of fresh 5W-30 oil to the new filter's rubber gasket. Thread the filter onto the stud by hand. Once the gasket contacts the mounting surface, tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand. Do not use a wrench; hand-tightening provides the correct seal without crushing the gasket or making future removal difficult.
Clean the drain plug and install a new aluminum crush washer. Thread the plug in by hand to prevent cross-threading. Tighten the 17mm plug to 29 ft-lbs (39 Nm) with a torque wrench. On these older Accords with high mileage, inspect the oil pan threads; if damaged, consider an oversized self-tapping plug as a repair.
Lower the Accord off the jack stands onto level ground. Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap. Using a funnel, pour in 4.5 quarts of 5W-30 oil. The F23A1 engine in the 1998-2002 Accord specifies 5W-30 (not 5W-20 used in later models). Replace the filler cap and wipe any spills from the valve cover.
Start the engine and idle for 60 seconds to fill the filter. Shut off and wait 2 minutes. Check the dipstick; level should be at the upper mark. Inspect underneath for leaks at the plug and filter. To reset the maintenance required light, hold the trip reset button with the key in ON position until the light goes out. Recycle used oil properly.
