Step-by-Step Instructions

Disconnect negative first
Loosen and remove the negative (-) terminal first, then the positive (+). This prevents shorting if your wrench touches the body.

Remove the hold-down
Remove the battery hold-down clamp or J-clamp. Note the group size and terminal orientation before lifting the battery out.

Clean the tray
Clean the tray and terminal posts with a wire brush and terminal cleaner. Inspect the cables for corrosion or damage.

Install new battery
Place the new battery matching group size and terminal type. Secure the hold-down. Connect positive (+) first, then negative (-).

Reset if required
Register or reset the battery monitoring system if the manual or a scan tool says to. Some vehicles learn the new battery's current draw.
