Rattling Under the Car

Metallic rattle from below? Usually a heat shield. Sometimes the converter.

What's happening

A metallic rattling from underneath, often at idle or certain RPMs. Heat shields are the usual suspects; the catalytic converter is the one you hope it isn't.

How urgent is it? Medium — schedule the fix

A loose shield is harmless noise. A breaking-up converter can clog the exhaust and kill performance. Tell them apart soon.

Most likely causes

    Loose exhaust heat shield

    Rust breaks the spot welds; the shield buzzes against the exhaust.

  2. 2

    Failing catalytic converter

    The internal honeycomb breaks apart and rattles inside the housing.

  3. 3

    Loose exhaust hanger

    The whole system shifts and knocks.

How to diagnose it — in order

  1. 1

    Tap the converter with a rubber mallet; rattling inside means it's breaking up.

  2. 2

    Inspect heat shields for broken welds and rust.

  3. 3

    Check that the exhaust hangers are intact and the system doesn't swing.

  4. 4

    Scan for P0420/P0430; a rattling converter usually sets efficiency codes.
