Whining / Whirring Noise

Whine that follows RPM or speed? That's the clue that finds it.

A whining or whirring noise. Whether it tracks engine RPM or road speed splits the suspects in half.

Most likely causes

    Worn idler or tensioner pulley

    Whine tracks engine RPM; the classic accessory-drive whine.

    Failing power steering pump

    Whine when turning the wheel, worse when cold.

  3. 3

    Alternator bearing

    Electrical whine that tracks RPM; may come with dimming lights.

    Wheel bearing

    Whine tracks road speed and changes when swerving left/right.

How to diagnose it — in order

  1. 1

    Determine: does it follow engine RPM (parked rev test) or road speed?

  2. 2

    Remove the serpentine belt briefly and spin each pulley by hand.

  3. 3

    For wheel bearings, swerve gently at speed; the noise changes with load.

  4. 4

    Check power steering fluid level if the whine appears when turning.
