P0128 — Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temp Below Regulating Temp)

What P0128 means

P0128 means the engine is taking too long to reach its normal operating temperature — the computer expected the coolant to warm up within a set time after a cold start, and it never got there.

Engines are designed to run at roughly 195–220°F. Below that, fuel does not vaporize properly, oil stays thick, and emissions climb — so the PCM runs a timer after each cold start. If the coolant temperature sensor still reports cold past the timer, P0128 sets.

Nine times out of ten, the thermostat is stuck open: instead of staying closed to let the engine warm up, it circulates coolant through the radiator from the start, and the engine never builds heat.

⚠️ How urgent is it?

Low urgency — P0128 will not strand you. But do not ignore it for months: a cold-running engine burns more fuel, wears faster (fuel dilutes the oil), produces more emissions, and your heater will blow lukewarm.

Fix it within a few weeks. The thermostat itself is cheap; the main cost is labor, which varies widely by vehicle. While you are in there, it is smart to inspect hoses and the coolant condition.

Most likely causes

  1. A thermostat stuck open, constantly circulating coolant through the radiator so the engine never reaches operating temperature — the most common cause by far.
  2. Low coolant level from a leak, reducing the system's ability to build and hold heat.
  3. A faulty engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor reporting colder than reality.
  4. In rare cases, a PCM software issue or a cooling fan stuck running at full speed.

How to diagnose it — in order

  1. 1

    Feel the upper radiator hose shortly after a cold start. If it gets hot within a couple of minutes, the thermostat is stuck open and circulating coolant too early.

  2. 2

    Check the coolant level in the reservoir and radiator (when cold). Top up and look for leaks if low — a leak can mimic thermostat failure.

  3. 3

    Watch the temperature gauge or live ECT data. If the engine never reaches the normal 195–220°F range after 10–15 minutes of driving, the thermostat is the prime suspect.

    Test or just replace the thermostat. It is an inexpensive part, and on most vehicles the labor is straightforward — thermostats are a wear item.

  5. 5

    Verify the ECT sensor reading against a known-good thermometer or compare with intake air temp on a cold engine; they should roughly agree.
