P0101 — Mass Airflow Sensor Range/Performance
What it means, how urgent it is, the most likely causes, and the exact order to diagnose it — with the repair guides that fix it.
What P0101 means
The MAF sensor sits in the intake and measures exactly how much air enters the engine — the single most important input for fuel calculations. The PCM cross-checks it against a model built from throttle angle, RPM, and (on many vehicles) the MAP sensor. When the real reading consistently disagrees with the model, the computer concludes the sensor data cannot be trusted and sets P0101.
In most cases the sensor is not dead — it is dirty. A thin film of oil or dust on the sensing wire is enough to throw its calibration off.
⚠️ How urgent is it?
Diagnose it soon rather than later. The fix is often a $10 can of MAF cleaner and ten minutes of work, so this is one of the cheapest check-engine codes to resolve when caught early.
Most likely causes
- A dirty mass airflow sensor — oil or dust on the sensing element skews its readings. The most common cause, especially on vehicles with oiled aftermarket air filters.
- An air leak in the intake tract between the MAF sensor and the throttle body (cracked intake boot, loose clamps).
- A clogged or collapsed engine air filter restricting airflow.
- A failing MAF sensor giving erratic or biased readings.
- Wiring or connector issues at the MAF sensor.
How to diagnose it — in order
-
1
Inspect the entire intake tract from the airbox to the throttle body. Flex the rubber boots and look for cracks, and check every clamp — unmetered air leaks are a classic P0101 trigger.
-
2
Clean the MAF sensor with dedicated MAF cleaner spray. Remove it, spray the sensing elements, let it dry completely, and clear the code before condemning the part.
-
3
Check the engine air filter. If it is clogged or oil-soaked, replace it — restricted airflow alone can set this code.
-
4
Watch live MAF data. At warm idle most engines read roughly 3–7 grams/second; snap the throttle and confirm the reading rises smoothly with RPM. Dropouts or flatlines mean a bad sensor.
-
5
Backprobe the MAF connector for steady reference voltage and ground, and wiggle-test the harness for intermittent faults.
Reading the code is step zero
A basic OBD2 scanner plugs into the port under your dash and tells you exactly which codes are stored — plus freeze-frame data showing what the engine was doing when the code set.
