P0507 — Idle Air Control System RPM Higher Than Expected

What P0507 means

P0507 means the engine is idling faster than the computer wants it to — actual RPM is consistently above the target idle speed.

At idle the PCM aims for a precise RPM (typically 600–900 depending on the vehicle) by metering air through the throttle body and idle air control valve. When the measured idle stays above target by a calibrated margin, the computer concludes that extra air is entering from somewhere it cannot control, and sets P0507.

The key insight: the computer is already trying to bring the idle down and failing. That means the air is coming from a leak or a mechanical issue, not a calibration problem — which is why this code usually leads to a vacuum leak or a dirty throttle body.

Safe to drive, but annoying and worth fixing: a high idle causes harsh engagement into drive, increased brake wear at stops, and higher fuel consumption.

It is rarely urgent. Start with the simple checks — vacuum leaks and throttle body cleaning resolve the large majority of P0507 cases without parts.

Most likely causes

  1. A vacuum leak letting unmetered air into the intake — the most common cause of high idle.
  2. A dirty throttle body with carbon buildup holding the throttle plate slightly open.
  3. A faulty or sticking idle air control (IAC) valve.
  4. PCV system problems: stuck-open PCV valve or leaking hoses.
  5. A misadjusted or binding throttle cable holding the throttle open (older vehicles).

How to diagnose it — in order

    Smoke-test or propane-test the intake for vacuum leaks — brake booster hose, PCV hoses, and intake gaskets are prime suspects.

    Remove the intake boot and inspect the throttle body bore. Carbon buildup around the plate is visible; clean it with throttle body cleaner and a soft cloth.

    Monitor IAC counts or duty cycle on a scan tool. If the computer is commanding the IAC fully closed and idle is still high, air is entering from somewhere else.

    Check the PCV valve: shake it (it should rattle) and inspect its hoses for collapse or cracks.

    After repairs, perform the idle relearn procedure for your Jeep Compass — many vehicles need a specific drive cycle or scan-tool command to relearn the correct idle.
