Follow these steps carefully
Never open a hot radiator or coolant reservoir cap — the system is pressurized and can spray scalding coolant. Wait until the engine is fully cool to the touch.
Find the translucent coolant overflow/expansion tank. Note the MIN/MAX (or COLD/HOT) marks. Confirm whether this vehicle is topped off at the reservoir only or also at a radiator cap.
Use only the coolant type specified for this make (color alone is not a reliable guide). Have premix or concentrate plus distilled water ready. Never mix incompatible formulas.
Remove the reservoir cap (and radiator cap only if the procedure requires it and the engine is cold). Add coolant slowly to the cold full mark. Wipe spills off painted surfaces immediately.
Start the engine with the heater on high. Watch the level as air works out; top off as needed. After the engine cools from a short drive, recheck the level and look for leaks or a rising temperature gauge.
