Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps carefully

1

Raise and support the vehicle

You MUST put the EPB in maintenance/service mode before retracting pistons; forcing them back without this can damage the EPB motors. Jack from the designated pinch weld points, support with stands, chock the front wheels. Disconnect the negative battery terminal after entering service mode.

🔧 Mechanic's note — Tom Becker

No scan tool with Honda EPB service mode? Stop here — a shop can put it in service mode for a few dollars. I've seen DIYers crack EPB motors pushing pistons back the old way; that's a four-figure caliper.

2

Remove the wheel and caliper

Remove the rear wheels (19mm lug nuts, torque to 80 ft-lb on reinstall). With the EPB in service mode, remove the caliper flange/pin bolts (13mm — hold the pins with a 17mm wrench to prevent spinning). Slide the caliper off and support with wire. The rotor is retained by Phillips-head screws — use an impact driver to avoid stripping them. To remove a stuck rotor, thread two 8x1.25mm bolts into the rotor's push holes and tighten evenly to push it off the hub.

3

Remove pads and inspect

Remove the old pads (OEM 43022-TLA-A00). The CR-V's rear pads typically last 30,000–70,000 km; replace at 3mm or less. Inspect the rotor for scoring or minimum thickness (stamped on the hat). Clean the caliper bracket abutment surfaces thoroughly. Critical: clean and lubricate the caliper slide pins with high-temp brake grease at every pad change — Honda specifically calls this out, and seized pins are the top cause of uneven wear on CR-Vs. Check the piston boot for tears.

4

Retract the piston correctly

With the EPB in service mode, push the piston straight back with a C-clamp — no rotation. If it resists, verify the EPB service mode is actually active. Do NOT force the piston — the EPB mechanism will break.

5

Install new pads

Install new pads (43022-TLA-A00 or equivalent) into the cleaned bracket — ensure they slide freely. Install the new rotor (42510-TLA-A00) and secure with the Phillips screws (snug with impact driver). Slide the caliper back over the pads. Reinstall the 13mm flange bolts to 26 ft-lb (hold pins with 17mm wrench). If you removed the bracket, torque the 17mm bracket bolts to 80 ft-lb. Ensure the brake hose isn't twisted. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the pads.

6

Reassemble and verify parking brake

Reinstall wheels, torque 19mm lug nuts to 80 ft-lb in star pattern. Lower the vehicle. Reconnect the battery. Test the parking brake via the console switch. Take a test drive with moderate stops to bed the pads.

All Done!

Test your repair before closing everything up. If something doesn't work right, double-check your steps.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • • Not properly securing the vehicle before starting the repair
  • • Failing to compress the brake caliper piston correctly
  • • Using incorrect torque settings when reassembling components
