Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps carefully

Disconnect the battery

Disconnect the negative battery terminal first. Never work on the alternator with the battery connected — the main power stud is always hot.

Locate and access the alternator

Find the alternator (usually front-top of the engine). Some vehicles require removing a wheel, inner fender liner, or intake for access — plan your path.

Remove the serpentine belt

Release the tensioner and slip the belt off the alternator pulley. Note the routing before removal so you can reinstall correctly.

Disconnect the wires

Remove the main power stud nut and the voltage regulator plug. Label the wires if needed so you reconnect them correctly.

Remove and replace the alternator

Remove the mounting bolts, pull out the old alternator, install the new one, and torque the mounting bolts to spec. Reconnect the wires and belt.

Reconnect and test

Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and verify charging voltage (13.5–14.5V) at the battery with a multimeter. If voltage is low, recheck connections.
