What's happening

Most likely causes

   Low or degraded fluid

   First check, cheapest fix.

   Worn transmission or engine mounts

   A clunk on engagement is often a mount, not the transmission.

3. 3

   Bad shift solenoid

   Electrical fault causing late or harsh shifts; usually sets a code.

4. 4

   Throttle position sensor fault

   The transmission shifts based on throttle input; bad data means bad shifts.

How to diagnose it — in order

1. 1

   Check fluid level and condition first.

2. 2

   Watch whether the clunk happens on engagement (mounts) or between gears (internal/solenoid).

3. 3

   Scan for codes; solenoid and sensor faults usually set them.

4. 4

   Inspect engine and transmission mounts for torn rubber.
