What P0300 means

P0300 means the engine computer has detected misfires happening randomly across multiple cylinders, rather than in one specific cylinder. A misfire is when the air-fuel mixture in a cylinder fails to ignite properly. Because it is not isolated to one cylinder, P0300 usually points to a problem affecting the whole engine, like fuel delivery, air intake, or ignition maintenance that is overdue.

⚠️ How urgent is it?

Moderate. A flashing check engine light with P0300 means active misfires that can overheat and destroy the catalytic converter fast. Pull over and shut the engine off if the light is flashing. A steady light with no drivability symptoms can wait a short time, but get it diagnosed soon.

Most likely causes

  1. Worn or fouled spark plugs across multiple cylinders — the single most common cause.
  2. Weak or failing ignition coils.
  3. Low fuel pressure from a weak fuel pump or clogged fuel filter.
  4. A vacuum leak affecting the whole intake, or a dirty mass airflow sensor.
  5. A clogged catalytic converter creating excessive backpressure (can both cause and result from misfires).

How to diagnose it — in order

    Read freeze-frame data and check for companion codes. P0301-P0312 alongside P0300 point at specific cylinders; P0171/P0174 point at a lean condition.

    Inspect the spark plugs. On a Audi Q7 with P0300, pull several plugs and check for wear, fouling, or incorrect gaps.

    Check fuel pressure at the rail. Low pressure starves all cylinders and causes random misfires.

    Inspect for vacuum leaks. Smoke-test the intake or spray carb cleaner around hoses and gaskets while watching for RPM changes.

    Check the MAF sensor reading. A contaminated sensor under-reports airflow and leans out every cylinder.
