My 2016 Outback 2.5i (104k miles) is using about a quart of oil every 1,500 miles. No leaks on the driveway and no blue smoke that I can see. Is this just what these engines do, or should I be looking for a problem?

A quart every 1,500 miles at 104k is excessive. Not a "Subaru thing" you should just live with.

The 2.5L FB engine in these Outbacks is known for this. The usual culprit is the piston oil rings. They lose tension with age, oil slips past into the combustion chamber, and the catalytic converter hides the evidence, which is why you see no blue smoke. The PCV valve is the other suspect, and that one is cheap, so check it first.

First, confirm the real rate. Subaru's own consumption test flags anything over a third of a quart in 1,200 miles as excessive. Yours is burning well past that. Fill to the full mark, drive 1,200 miles, and check it on level ground with the engine warm and shut off. Write the numbers down.

One thing to know: the oil-consumption class action settlement and its 8-year/100,000-mile extended warranty did not include the 2016 model year. At 104k you are past powertrain coverage anyway. A dealer may still run a consumption test for you, so it is worth asking, but expect to pay for whatever fix comes out of it.

If the rate holds, the fix is engine work: new rings, and sometimes a short block. While you decide, keep it topped off with 0W-20 and never let it run low.
