2017 Civic EX-T, 89k miles. Yesterday it lost power on the highway and the check engine light came on. It still runs but feels gutless above 3000 rpm. I haven't had the codes read yet. What's the most likely culprit on these 1.5 turbos?

Get the codes read first. Any parts store will scan it free. On a 1.5T that suddenly goes gutless with the light on, my money is on the turbo side: a boost leak, a sticking wastegate, or a boost control solenoid acting up. When the computer sees boost below target it caps power to protect the engine, which is why it feels fine down low and falls on its face above 3000.

Common places these leak: the clamps on the charge piping between the turbo, intercooler, and throttle body work loose over time, and a split hose can look fine at idle but open up under boost. The wastegate actuator arm can also stick or wear at the linkage, which holds the gate open and dumps boost straight into the exhaust.

It is not always boost, though. A failing fuel injector or a weak ignition coil can feel similar, and the 1.5T has known injector issues. That is why the code matters. A P0299 points at underboost. A P030x misfire code points at ignition or fuel.

Do not just replace the turbo. Start with the scan, then have the intake and charge system smoke tested for leaks. Most of these turn out to be a hose or a clamp, not a dead turbo.

Feels gutless above 3000 rpm on a turbo Civic usually means the turbo is not making boost. Get the codes read first, most parts stores do it free, and do not clear them before a diagnosis. If it shows P0299 (turbo underboost), you are looking at a boost leak or a turbo problem.

Start simple. Pop the hood and inspect every pipe between the turbo, the intercooler, and the throttle body. These 1.5Ts have had charge pipes pop off their clamps, and a disconnected pipe gives you exactly this: normal below 3000 rpm, no power above it, and a check engine light. Look for popped-off hoses, cracked plastic piping, and oil residue around the connections. Have someone rev the engine while you listen for a loud hiss under boost.

If the piping is solid, think misfire. Worn plugs or a weak coil will also kill power and set the light. At 89k you are nearing plug service anyway, so a plug inspection costs you nothing.

Worth knowing: Honda extended powertrain coverage on 2016 to 2018 1.5T Civics for fuel dilution of the oil, and some owners reported sudden power loss with it. Your car is likely outside that window now, but a dealer can check for any open campaigns on your VIN.

One caution: if the light ever starts flashing, stop driving. That means an active misfire that can cook the catalytic converter.
