Warm the 5.3L V8 and park level

Idle the Silverado for 2–3 minutes to thin the oil, then park on a flat surface and set the parking brake. The 5.3L V8 takes 6 quarts of 5W-30 — have the oil, a filter, and a drain pan ready. The truck's ground clearance means you likely will not need to lift it.

Locate the drain plug and filter

Slide under the front and find the drain plug on the rear of the oil pan. The spin-on filter is on the driver's side of the block, accessible from below. Place a large drain pan under the plug.

Drain the oil

Remove the oil fill cap on the passenger-side valve cover to vent the crankcase. Loosen the drain plug with a wrench and remove it by hand. The 5.3L's 6-quart sump takes about 10–15 minutes to drain fully.

Replace the filter

Loosen the old filter with a filter wrench and spin it off by hand. The 5.3L's filter is in a tight spot — a cap wrench helps. Clean the mounting surface, verify the old gasket came off, oil the new gasket, and install hand-tight plus three-quarter turn.

Refill and check

Thread the drain plug back in by hand, then snug it with the wrench. Pour 6 quarts of 5W-30 through the fill tube. Start the engine for 30 seconds, shut it off, wait 2 minutes, and verify the dipstick reads full. Check underneath for leaks.

Reset the oil-life monitor

Turn the key to ON with the engine off and press the accelerator pedal fully three times within five seconds, then start the truck to confirm the 'Change Engine Oil' message cleared. Or reset through the driver information center. Record the mileage for the next interval.

Recycle the used oil

Pour the 6 quarts of used oil into sealed containers and bag the old filter for recycling at a parts store. The 5.3L with Active Fuel Management is sensitive to oil condition — do not extend intervals beyond the monitor's recommendation.
