Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps carefully

1

Park and prep

Turn the ignition to LOCK, make sure the engine is fully off, and set the parking brake. Open the hood. The battery sits at the front of the engine bay on the driver's side, under a plastic cover. Grab your 10mm wrench or socket.

2

Disconnect the negative cable first

Loosen the 10mm nut on the negative terminal and wiggle the clamp free by twisting and pulling. Never pry it off with a metal tool - Honda warns this can damage the cable. Tuck the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery while you work.

3

Disconnect the positive cable

Loosen the 10mm nut on the positive terminal, remove the clamp the same way, and move it clear of the battery.

4

Remove the hold-down

Loosen the two 10mm nuts on the hold-down J-hooks. Once loose, unhook the J-hooks from the bottom of the battery tray, then lift off the top cross-bar and the plastic battery cover.

5

Lift the old battery out

Lift the battery straight out of the tray. It weighs roughly 29 pounds, so use two hands. Note the orientation of the terminals before you remove it - the new battery goes in exactly the same way.

6

Clean the tray and cable clamps

Scrub any corrosion off the tray and the inside of the cable clamps with a wire brush or battery terminal cleaner. A baking-soda-and-water wash works on heavy white or green buildup. Rinse, dry, and inspect the positive cable for corrosion running down the wire braid - a known weak spot on this CR-V generation.

7

Install the new battery

Set the new Group 51R battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one. Reinstall the hold-down bar and J-hooks and tighten the nuts snugly. Do not overtighten - crushing the case can crack it.

8

Reconnect the cables - positive first

Connect the POSITIVE cable first, then the negative. Tighten both 10mm clamp nuts snugly and confirm the clamps cannot be twisted by hand. Coat both terminals with dielectric grease or anti-corrosion spray.

9

Start and finish up

Make sure no tools are left in the engine bay, then start the engine. Let it run while you check that nothing is loose. Your radio presets will be cleared and you may need to enter your radio anti-theft code - find it on the sticker or card in your owner's manual, or call Honda for it. Then complete the post-install resets: the driver's auto power window may need its reset procedure, and the PCM idle relearn (run the engine until warm, then idle a few minutes) smooths out any rough idle.

All Done!

Test your repair before closing everything up. If something doesn't work right, double-check your steps.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • • Overtightening the hold-down bar, which can crack the battery case.
  • • Prying the terminal clamps with a metal tool instead of loosening the 10mm nut.
  • • Installing the new battery with the terminals reversed from the old orientation.
  • • Forgetting the radio anti-theft code - write it down or use a memory saver before disconnecting.
  • • Skipping the PCM idle relearn and wondering why the idle is rough for the first few drives.
  • • Installing the new battery over uncleaned corrosion in the tray or clamps.
