Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps carefully

1

Prepare (MB 229.5 ONLY, check drivetrain!)

The 2017–2023 Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W213, 2.0L turbo M274 — E300) engine oil change: use 0W-30 or 0W-40 meeting MB 229.5 spec MANDATORY (not just any 0W-40). You'll need: MB 229.5-approved 0W-40 (buy 8 quarts — you'll use 7.4 RWD or 6.9 4Matic), Mercedes filter 2701800109 (cartridge-style), drain pan, funnel. CAPACITY SPLIT: 7.4 qt RWD / 6.9 qt 4Matic (with filter) — check your drivetrain! The M274 turbo needs the large volume. Park on level ground, warm engine slightly. Note: this guide is for the 2.0L turbo (E300); the 6-cylinder and AMG models differ — confirm in your owner's manual.

2

Drain the Old Oil

Remove the underbody panel for access. Position the drain pan under the drain plug. Remove the drain plug — let the old oil drain completely (expect 7+ quarts — the M274 holds a lot). The E-Class's large sump takes a while to drain. Ensure your pan holds 8+ quarts. The old oil should be dark but not sludgy (the 10k interval with MB-spec oil keeps it clean).

3

Replace Cartridge Filter

Remove the cartridge filter housing cap. Replace the filter element (2701800109) and the housing O-rings. The M274 uses a cartridge (not spin-on) — the element goes in the housing. Lubricate the new O-rings with fresh oil. Reinstall the housing cap — tighten to spec (don't over-tighten the plastic). Ensure the old element and O-rings came out.

4

Reinstall Drain Plug (30 ft-lbs)

Reinstall the drain plug with a new washer. Torque to 30 ft-lbs. The M274's drain plug needs the full 30 ft-lbs — don't under-torque. Use a torque wrench. The 30 ft-lb spec is higher than many Japanese vehicles.

5

Add 7.4 or 6.9 Quarts (check drivetrain!)

Add MB 229.5-approved 0W-40: 7.4 quarts for RWD, 6.9 quarts for 4Matic. Check your drivetrain BEFORE filling — the 0.5-qt difference matters. Pour through the filler cap. The M274's large capacity means you need almost 2 gallons. Don't use non-MB-approved oil — the turbo needs the 229.5 spec. Check the dipstick after filling.

6

Check Level, Leaks, Reset Service

Start the engine — check for leaks (drain plug, filter housing). Let it run 30 seconds, shut off, recheck the oil level. Top up if needed. The M274 should idle smoothly. Reset the service indicator via the instrument cluster. Mercedes interval: 10,000 miles / 1 year with MB 229.5 oil. The MB-229.5-mandatory requirement and the RWD/4Matic capacity split (7.4 vs 6.9 qt) are the E-Class's defining details. The 2.0L turbo's large sump is unusual for a 4-cylinder — don't underfill. (Other E-Class engines differ — this is the M274 E300.)

All Done!

Test your repair before closing everything up. If something doesn't work right, double-check your steps.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • • Overfilling the engine oil
  • • Using incorrect oil filter
  • • Not properly tightening the drain plug
