Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps carefully

1

Know the interval and remove panel C

Yamaha calls for cleaning this filter every 20 to 40 hours of use, and more often in dust or water. Park on level ground, engine off and cool, and remove panel C to start.

2

Open the case and lift out the element

Unhook the air filter case cover holders and take the cover off. Slide the element assembly out and separate the foam sponge from its mesh guide carefully; old foam tears easily, and torn foam gets replaced.

3

Wash the sponge in solvent, never gasoline

Wash the sponge gently but thoroughly in parts-cleaning solvent until the dirt stops coming out. Never use gasoline or any low-flash-point solvent for this job; the fire risk is real and completely avoidable.

🔧 Mechanic's note — Tom Becker

Squeeze the foam, never wring it. Twisting tears the cell structure you cannot see, and the element starts passing dirt even though it still looks fine sitting in the case.

4

Squeeze dry and oil the element

Squeeze the solvent out, let the sponge dry completely, then work foam air-filter oil into the whole element. Squeeze out the excess; the foam should end up wet all over but not dripping.

5

Check the case check hoses

Look at the two check hoses at the bottom of the air filter case and clear out any water, oil, or dirt collected in them. A plugged hose lets moisture sit against the element.

6

Refit the element and cover

Set the oiled element back on its guide and into the case, making sure it seats fully all the way around, then refit the cover and panel C. Never run the engine without the element installed.

All Done!

Test your repair before closing everything up. If something doesn't work right, double-check your steps.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • • Wringing the foam out like a rag, which tears it internally.
  • • Running the filter dripping wet with oil, which chokes airflow and fouls the plug.
  • • Skipping the service in dusty conditions. The 20 to 40 hour interval assumes normal use; farm dust shortens it.
