Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps carefully

1

Locate the battery in the left front wheel opening

Park on level ground with the key off. On 2014-2020 Sportsman 570 models the battery sits in the left front wheel opening, in front of the PVT cover, not under the seat like most ATVs.

2

Remove the cover and hold-down strap

Release the battery cover and the hold-down strap so the battery is free to move. Note how the cables are routed before you touch them, because they must go back exactly the same way.

3

Disconnect the black negative cable first

Loosen the terminal bolt and lift the black negative cable off first, then the red positive cable. On conventional batteries, also pull the vent tube free. Keep both cable ends from touching metal.

🔧 Mechanic's note — Tom Becker

Negative first, negative last. Every time, no exceptions. If your wrench touches the frame while it is on the positive terminal with the negative still connected, you will get a shower of sparks.

4

Lift the old battery out

Grip the battery firmly with both hands and lift it straight out of the tray. It is heavier than it looks, and the wheel-well location makes the angle awkward, so take your time.

5

Clean the cables and terminals

Scrub cable ends and the new battery's terminals with a stiff wire brush. Corrosion wipes off with a solution of one tablespoon of baking soda in a cup of water; rinse and dry everything.

6

Set the new battery and connect red first

Place the fully charged battery in the tray and coat the terminals with dielectric grease or petroleum jelly. Connect the red positive cable first, then the black negative cable last, torquing the terminal bolts to 5 ft-lbs (7 Nm).

7

Refit the strap and cover, then test

Refit the hold-down strap and the battery cover, and make sure the cables are tucked clear of the tire and suspension. Start the engine and confirm the starter cranks strong and the dash lights behave.

All Done!

Test your repair before closing everything up. If something doesn't work right, double-check your steps.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • • Looking for the battery under the seat. On these years it lives in the left front wheel opening.
  • • Reversing the cable order and shorting a wrench against the frame.
  • • Skipping the hold-down strap, then letting the battery bounce around in the wheel well until a terminal works loose.
