Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps carefully

1

Warm the engine and park on level ground

Park the Sportsman on flat ground, set the parking brake, and run the engine for two or three minutes so the oil warms and flows freely. Then shut it off and let it sit briefly.

2

Drain the old oil

Slide a drain pan under the engine, reach the drain plug through the skid plate opening, and remove it. Let every drop drain into the pan, and keep the plug where you can find it.

3

Fit a new sealing washer and reinstall the plug

Fit a new sealing washer on the drain plug every change; the old one will not seal twice. Thread the plug in by hand, then torque it to 14-18 ft-lbs (19-24 Nm) with a torque wrench.

🔧 Mechanic's note — Ray Delgado

I have chased more than one mystery leak that turned out to be a reused drain washer. It is a cheap part, and it is the only thing sealing two quarts of oil inside your engine.

4

Remove the spin-on oil filter

Unscrew the old spin-on filter with an oil filter wrench and let it drain into the pan. Wipe the mounting surface clean and check that the old filter's rubber gasket came off with the filter.

5

Install the new filter hand-tight plus a half turn

Smear clean engine oil on the new filter's gasket, then thread the filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the mounting surface. Tighten it an additional one-half turn by hand and no more.

6

Refill with two quarts of PS-4 5W-50

Pour in 2 quarts (1.9 liters) of Polaris PS-4 full synthetic 5W-50 oil. Reinstall the dipstick, then pull it and confirm the level sits inside the marked range before you start the engine.

7

Start it, check for leaks, and recheck the level

Start the engine and let it idle for a minute while you watch the drain plug and filter for drips. Shut it off, wait a minute, and check the dipstick one last time.

All Done!

Test your repair before closing everything up. If something doesn't work right, double-check your steps.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • • Reusing the old drain plug sealing washer, which almost always seeps.
  • • Over-tightening the spin-on filter with a wrench. Hand-tight plus a half turn is the spec; more makes the next change miserable.
  • • Forgetting to check that the old filter gasket came off, then double-gasketing the new filter and blowing out the seal.
