Battery Keeps Dying

Killing batteries one after another? The battery was never the problem.

What's happening

The battery dies overnight or every few days, even a brand-new one. Something is either not charging it or draining it.

How urgent is it? Medium — schedule the fix

You'll get stranded again until the root cause is fixed. Diagnose before buying another battery.

Most likely causes

  1. 1

    Failing alternator

    Not charging while driving; the battery slowly dies over days.

  2. 2

    Parasitic drain

    Something stays awake overnight: a trunk light, module, or aftermarket accessory.

  3. 3

    Corroded connections

    Looks charged but can't deliver current.

  4. 4

    Old battery

    If it's over 4-5 years old, it may just be done.

How to diagnose it — in order

  1. 1

    Test charging voltage with the engine running: 13.5-14.5V is healthy.

  2. 2

    For overnight drains, do a parasitic draw test with a multimeter (under 50mA is normal).

  3. 3

    Pull fuses one at a time while watching the draw to isolate the circuit.

  4. 4

    Check that interior and trunk lights actually turn off.
